In a bid to combat the perennial problem of window condensation during winter, UK air treatment specialist Meaco has unveiled a simple yet highly effective solution. If left unaddressed, window condensation can create ideal conditions for mould growth, leading to damp smells, damage to fabrics and decorations, and even contributing to respiratory illnesses.
Chris Michael, the managing director of Meaco, explained the science behind window condensation. He highlighted three crucial factors determining condensation formation: the level of moisture in the air, the room’s air temperature, and the surface temperature of the windows. Daily activities such as drying clothes indoors, boiling vegetables, or even breathing contribute to the moisture in the air, which, when coupled with colder windows, results in condensation formation, especially overnight.
To break the condensation cycle, Michael advised identifying and preventing sources of moisture, such as using lids on saucepans while cooking, ensuring clothes are well-dried (by perhaps using an extra spin cycle), and utilizing bathroom extractor fans when showering.
While opening windows is a common practice to alleviate condensation, Michael warned of its limitations. Although it temporarily removes condensation, it could lead to increased heating bills as the heating system works harder to warm the incoming cold air. Additionally, outside air might introduce allergens and pollutants. The ideal solution, according to the expert, is a dehumidifier.
Dehumidifiers, Michael explained, effectively remove excess moisture from the air, preventing condensation on windows. By collecting the excess moisture in a small tank, these devices ensure the air remains dry, eliminating the conditions necessary for condensation to form. Apart from being a simple and efficient solution, dehumidifiers also offer cost-effectiveness and help dry clothes, thereby saving households on energy bills.

Investing in a dehumidifier, as recommended by experts, can not only provide a condensation-free environment but also contribute to a healthier and more comfortable home during the winter months.
