What Is Google Stack?
Google Stack is an app that helps you scan and store documents digitally. It takes pictures of your receipts, bills, and other papers and saves them as PDF files. It also sorts these files into different categories. You can download this app for free, but it’s only available for Android phones and tablets in the United States.
To find out more about the app, go to Google Play, search for “Stack: PDF Scanner by Google Area 120,” and then click on “About This App.”
How Google Stack Works
Google Stack was launched on March 30, 2021, and it was made by a group within Google called Area 120. This group works inside Google and is owned by Alphabet Inc., which is also the parent company of Google.
When you have Stack installed on your Android device from the Google Play store, you can start using it. First, take a picture of a document. The app will then scan the document and give it a title. It will also suggest the right category, called a “stack,” where you should save it. This suggestion is based on what’s in the document.

If you have existing PDFs or photos of documents on your Android phone, you can also bring them into Stack and scan them.
The stacks have different names, like Bills, Receipts, Banking, House, IDs, Vehicles, Insurance, Legal, Medical, Tax, and Travel. If you don’t like the names that are already there, you can change them. You can also move a document to a different stack or make your own category. You’re even able to put a PDF into more than one stack. You can also change how a document looks by cropping it or adjusting its colors. The app already does a lot of fixing to make the document look better, like magic.
A person who reviews apps for their job was really impressed by how well Stack can take a crumpled receipt and figure out what it says, putting it in the right stack.
Google Stack Strong Points
Scanning apps have been available for quite some time. What sets Stack apart is its special organizing feature – the way it “reads” a document and puts it in the right place.
Because Stack can understand important information in the document, you can find your saved documents in different ways. You can search by the name of a store, the date a bill needs to be paid, an amount of money, and more. The app also lets you search for specific words inside a document.

Another great thing about Stack is that it can work together with Google Drive. You can choose to automatically keep a copy of your saved documents in Google Drive. This makes it easy to access them from a computer. So, even if you ever stop using Stack or if Google decides not to continue it, your scanned documents will still be safe and accessible. Some people are skeptical about whether Google will keep the app going, but this feature helps you keep your important documents secure.
Reactions to Google Stack
Stack gets mostly positive feedback from people who review it on the Google Play store. Up until March 4, 2022, the app has received a rating of 4.7 stars out of 5 from around 6,680 reviewers. People often say things like “I use this app every day” and “this app is amazing.”
However, there have been some complaints. Some people have had issues with the AI part of the app and found it hard to switch between cameras. A few people have also shared concerns about how Google uses data since Google earns money that way.

Google Stack Competitors
Services that help scan and convert documents into digital files have been around for a while. One of the earliest ones is CamScanner, which goes back to 2011.
Google Stack is in competition with several other popular mobile apps that do similar things. These apps include:
- Microsoft Office Lens, available for both iPhone and Android. It allows you to save your scanned documents to OneNote or OneDrive.
- Tiny Scanner, which has versions for devices running iOS and Android operating systems.
- Adobe Scan, designed for iOS and Android. This app can upload your scanned documents as PDFs or JPEGs to Adobe Document Cloud.
Is Google Stack Safe?
Stack employs Google’s advanced security and sign-in technology to keep your documents safe. To add an extra layer of protection, you can set it up so that you need to use your face or fingerprint to unlock the app every time you use it.
How Do I Use Google Stack?
To begin, log in to the Google Stack app with your Google account. Next, tap the + button located at the bottom-right corner of the screen. There are three ways to scan and import items:
If you have files that are already in digital form, choose the PDF option.
If you have a photo of the item, select the Gallery option.
If you want to create a digital version of a physical document, go for the Camera option.
Using the Camera option is similar to taking a regular smartphone photo. Place the paper on a well-lit and even surface, keep the phone steady, and press the Scan button. The app will automatically adjust the image by cropping and sharpening it.
Where Are Google Stack Documents Stored?
The documents you put into Google Stack are kept inside the app itself, and they are sorted into various categories, which are called “stacks.” You can also choose to make copies of these documents and store them in your Google Drive.
