According to research conducted by ForwardKeys, a leading travel analytics company, Costa Rica experienced an impressive 19% growth in air ticket bookings since 2019. The study, which analyzed tickets booked until September 26, 2023, revealed a strong resurgence in tourism, with travelers eagerly venturing out again after pandemic-related travel restrictions began to ease.
Following closely behind Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic secured the second spot with an 18% growth, while Colombia held a respectable 14% increase in bookings, making it the third most popular destination of the year. The allure of the Caribbean was undeniable, with seven out of the top ten destinations boasting picturesque coastlines, including Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.
Surprisingly, amidst the dominance of tropical havens, Greece stood out as the sole European representative in the top ten list. The country experienced a 6% growth since 2019, marking a notable 11% increase since 2022.
The shift in travel trends post-pandemic has prompted experts to contemplate the future of tourism. ForwardKeys insights vice president, Olivier Ponti, emphasized the need for destinations and travel businesses to embrace socially, economically, and environmentally responsible tourism models. He stated, “‘Growth at all costs’ is no longer viable. Destinations and travel businesses need to focus on new models of tourism which are socially, economically, and environmentally responsible.”
