Van Jones, renowned for his extensive involvement in launching and collaborating with non-profit enterprises, has become well-accustomed to soliciting grant funds. However, the financial boon he encountered two years ago, bestowed upon him by none other than the world’s wealthiest individual, exceeded all expectations. In 2021, Jeff Bezos, the visionary behind Amazon, bestowed upon the prominent CNN figure the esteemed Courage and Civility Award. This accolade was a recognition of Jones’ display of “ involvement” in his endeavors to foster unity within an increasingly divided world. What magnified the honor was the accompanying grant of an astounding $100 million, aptly dubbed “miracle money.”

Nonetheless, this unprecedented grant came with a caveat: a ten-year window within which Van Jones was to judiciously channel the funds into a spectrum of organizations and enterprises actively engendering positive global change. Speaking to Us Weekly, Van Jones disclosed, “My immediate impulse was to upend the entrenched systems that have perpetually stifled underestimated communities. It became evident to me that I ought to direct my efforts towards disrupting the for-profit prison complex, along with the systems culpable for environmental degradation in our neighborhoods, ultimately culminating in cycles of impoverishment.”
