Halifax, Yorkshire – October 23, 2023
The Victoria Theatre in Halifax is about to be turned upside down by a theatrical spectacle that combines mayhem, laughter, and audience participation in Oscar Wilde’s timeless classic, The Importance of Being Earnest. This new adaptation of Wilde’s masterpiece promises an evening of uproarious comedy, unexpected surprises, and an unforgettable experience for both the audience and the performers.
The traditional play takes an unexpected turn when the actor scheduled to play Ernest fails to show up, throwing the entire production into jeopardy. In a daring move to salvage the show, a member of the audience is recruited on the spot to take on the lead role. From this moment on, chaos ensues, with more and more audience members being called upon to step into various roles, creating a whirlwind of slapstick humor, misplaced props, and hilariously misguided scripts.

The innovative adaptation, which has received critical acclaim during its UK tour, offers a unique experience every night. As the actors are forced to improvise in response to the unpredictable events unfolding on stage, the boundaries between the cast and the audience blur, creating a one-of-a-kind theatrical encounter.
For 27-year-old actor Brendan Barclay, who plays the role of the put-upon stage manager Josh, this production is a dream come true. Having grown up in Hebden Bridge and attended Calder High School in Mytholmroyd, Brendan is no stranger to the local theater scene. However, performing at the Victoria Theatre holds a special significance for him. “It’s a real pinch-me moment,” he confessed, describing his excitement at being part of a show that challenges conventional theater norms.

In this adaptation, Brendan’s character, Josh, communicates solely through actions due to his paralyzing fear of the audience. Brendan explained, “I can’t express myself through speaking; I just react physically.” This unique approach adds an extra layer of hilarity to the already chaotic performance, making it a truly unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Creative director Simon Paris shared his excitement about the play’s innovative concept. “Every night it feels like opening night as we truly can’t predict what is going to happen and who is going to end up joining us on stage,” he said. The production’s unpredictability and audience involvement have created an electrifying atmosphere, leaving theatergoers in stitches and eagerly anticipating what surprises the next performance will bring.

The Importance of Being…Earnest? is set to grace the stage of the Victoria Theatre on November 18, promising an evening of side-splitting laughter and theatrical magic. Tickets for this unmissable show are available online, offering audiences the chance to be part of a theatrical experience like no other. Don’t miss your opportunity to witness the mayhem unfold and become a part of the laughter at this extraordinary production.
